This guide was checked on September 9, 2026 against RBI's current commercial-bank card directions and official issuer guidance.

Regulations and issuer procedures can change. Confirm the latest process for your card before requesting closure.

The short answer

Blocking, cutting or deleting a credit card from an app does not close its account. You must submit a formal closure request through an official issuer channel and receive confirmation.

Before applying, check unpaid transactions, EMIs, subscriptions, reward points and pending refunds. Save your request reference, final payment receipt and closure confirmation.

1. Decide whether closure solves the problem

Start with the reason you want to close the card. If the concern is an annual fee, compare it with benefits you actually use. You may ask about a lower-cost product, but do not assume a downgrade or fee waiver will be available.

If managing several cards encourages overspending, closing an unnecessary account may simplify your finances.

Editorial interpretation: Keep a card because it serves a useful purpose, not because you feel you must hold many cards.

2. Blocking and closing are different

Blocking restricts transactions. It does not necessarily end the credit-card account. Removing the card from a shopping site or cutting the physical card also does not submit a closure request.

If your card is lost or you see an unknown transaction, block it immediately. Permanent closure can be handled after the account is protected.

3. Check everything you still owe

Review the latest statement and recent account activity for:

  • Outstanding statement balances
  • Unbilled, pending or unsettled transactions
  • Interest, fees and taxes
  • Active EMIs or card-linked loans
  • Disputes and refunds still being processed

Ask the issuer for the complete amount required for closure. A recent transaction may not appear on the last statement.

SBI Card says termination becomes effective after all outstanding amounts are paid. It also says closure of its primary card account terminates associated add-on cards. These instructions are issuer-specific, so confirm the position for your card.

4. Move subscriptions and recurring payments

List mobile bills, insurance premiums, streaming subscriptions, utilities, software services and memberships connected to the card. Update the payment method with each merchant.

If you no longer want a service, cancel the service itself and keep the confirmation. HDFC Bank says e-mandates on an inactive card cannot be cancelled through its SiHub portal and must be handled on the merchant's platform. This is HDFC-specific guidance; check your issuer's current process.

5. Review rewards and pending refunds

Check unused reward points, pending cashback, vouchers, expected merchant refunds and any credit already in the account.

Reward treatment depends on the programme terms. Do not assume points remain available after closure, and do not make an unnecessary purchase merely to use a small balance.

RBI's directions state that a credit balance remaining after closure must be transferred to the cardholder's bank account. Ask the issuer how pending rewards and refunds will be handled.

6. Submit a formal closure request

Use an official channel provided by the issuer. RBI requires covered commercial banks to offer multiple options, such as a helpline, dedicated email, IVR, visible website link, internet banking or mobile app.

The issuer cannot insist on a postal request or another method that may delay receipt. State clearly that you want permanent account closure.

Save the following evidence:

  • Request date and reference number
  • Acknowledgement from the issuer
  • Final payment receipt
  • Final closure confirmation

Never give an OTP to someone who calls and offers to close the card. Enter it only inside an official issuer process.

7. Understand the RBI closure timeline

For commercial banks covered by the current RBI directions:

  • A closure request must be honoured within seven working days, subject to payment of all dues.
  • The cardholder must be notified after closure.
  • Time taken by the customer to clear dues is excluded from the seven-day period.
  • If there is no outstanding balance, delay beyond the prescribed period attracts compensation of ₹500 per calendar day.
  • The issuer must report the closure to credit bureaus.

These provisions and their applicability are time-sensitive. Reconfirm them before acting or publishing an update.

8. Consider credit utilisation

Closing a card reduces total available credit. If balances on other cards do not change, your utilisation ratio can rise.

Combined limits₹2,00,000₹1,00,000
Remaining balance₹30,000₹30,000

This arithmetic does not predict a credit-score change. Consider fees, spending control and your complete financial position.

What to do after closure

  1. Save the closure confirmation securely.
  2. Follow the issuer's instructions for destroying the card.
  3. Confirm essential recurring payments use another method.
  4. Monitor any pending merchant refund.
  5. Check your credit report later for the closed status.
  6. Raise a written complaint if the account remains active.
